If your newly bought black jeans or dark blue jeans are bleeding colour, and you're getting worried, relax. There's very little to be concerned as this is a rather common issue with most dark coloured denim. It happens because the dye used in dark jeans is sometimes unable to fully penetrate into the fabric fibre. This causes the excess dye to sit on the surface, which then releases during wash or wear, resulting in colour bleeding.
Typically, this often happens in the first few washes, or even from friction when wearing the jeans. Factors like washing in hot water or using harsh detergents can also cause more dye to escape, leading to fading or staining other clothes. But there are ways to tackle this. Here are a few ideas:
- Pre-wash with cold water: Soak your new jeans in cold water before you wear them for the first time. If needed, add a few drops of vinegar to this mixture. Vinegar helps to set the dye better.
- Mild Detergent: Use only mild detergent to wash your jeans.
- Air Dry: Reverse your jeans and air dry in shade to preserve the colour.
These simple steps can reduce colour bleeding and keep your jeans looking fresh longer.
